VTuber Selen Tatsuki faces severe cyberbullying and harassment

Cyberbullying campaign targets VTuber Selen Tatsuki

The realm of virtual YouTubers has been marred by an unpleasant incident involving Selen Tatsuki, a prominent figure associated with the English branch of the Japanese VTuber agency, Nijisanji. Selen, who is known for her vibrant dragon persona that hails from the moon, has unfortunately become a victim of cyberbullying and online harassment.

Selen Tatsuki’s journey as a VTuber began with her debut on February 12, 2021, as a member of the second-generation group OBSYDIA, which includes fellow VTubers Rosemi Lovelock and Petra Gurin. Her character, a sky dragon with a passion for singing, gaming, and engaging with her community, quickly garnered a substantial following.

However, a section of the online community has targeted Selen with malicious intent. She has endured a barrage of unfounded rumors, derogatory remarks, and false allegations across different internet platforms. The harassment intensified to the extent of death threats and doxxing, compromising her security and privacy.

The harassment surfaced publicly around November 2021 when Selen prepared to release “Fly High,” her first original song, timed with her birthday celebrations on December 1. Accusations of song title plagiarism surfaced, yet there was no substantiation of such claims. Critics went beyond questioning her originality, attacking her vocal capabilities and her virtual persona’s aesthetic design with derogatory comments.

The situation took a darker turn in January 2022 during a group horror game stream with other Nijisanji EN affiliates. An inadvertent slip led to the exposure of Selen’s personal data, which bullies exploited to uncover her real-world identity and whereabouts. This breach resulted in a spate of harassment through phone, email, and social media, and the spread of her personal details on various forums further fueled the harassment.

Reddit, a widely-used online platform for community discussions, became a battleground of sorts. Subreddits dedicated to Selen Tatsuki emerged, with some fostering support and others breeding hostility. The latter were rife with vitriolic content aimed at undermining her character and professional integrity. Reddit moderators stepped in to ban certain subreddits that breached the community guidelines on harassment and privacy. Yet, this was only a temporary impediment as the offenders migrated to new subreddits or alternative platforms to perpetuate their vendetta.

In the face of adversity, Selen Tatsuki has shown remarkable resilience. She has repeatedly acknowledged the support from her fans, affectionately referred to as “Moonies,” and has encouraged them to overlook the bullies rather than engaging with them, which would inadvertently give the negativity more power. Selen’s response has been to concentrate on the positive facets of her VTuber activities, with her focus firmly on the joy her work brings to many.

Her plight has not gone unnoticed by the VTuber community, with colleagues from Nijisanji EN and beyond offering support. Fellow VTubers have applauded her for her perseverance, talent, and affable nature, and have called for an end to online bullying, advocating for kindness and mutual respect within the digital space.
